If the DJ is Robin then the MC is most definitely Batman. Hip-hop music as we’ve come to know it kicked off in the Bronx (a borough of New York City) in the 70s. Started as block parties featuring DJs playing 70s funk and soul records. The founders such as Kool Herc, Grand Wizzard Theodore, Afrika Bambaataa and Grandmaster Flash experimented with a variety of techniques for example extending percussive breakdowns of two copies of the same record to allow long repetitive passages for the MCs to rap over the top.
Rapping has always been a way of telling stories and giving the youth a voice. The creativity knows no bounds and as the years have passed the art form has been accepted more and more by a wider audience and respected for the poetry it is. Often and accurately referred to as street poetry.
